All the doctors give contraceptive advice and can prescribe the contraceptive pill. The first time you require advice please make an appointment to see a doctor. Subsequent appointments can be made with the nurse.
Condoms are available free – please ask at reception.
Emergency contraception advice and prescriptions are also given. If emergency contraception is needed you can attend the daily walk-in clinic between 10am and 11am or contact NHS 111 at the weekends. The emergency contraceptive pill can be used up to three days after the event but is more effective if taken early.
The intra-uterine device is more effective for emergency contraception and can be used up to five days afer the event. We do not fit this at our practice but can be arranged at local family planning clinics. The clinic local to our practice is the Margaret Pyke Centre (44 Wicklow St, London WC1X 9HL – Tel. 020 3317 3737). They can arrange an urgent assessment if necessary. The emergency contraception pill can still be taken while waiting for this in case there are any problems with fitting the intra-uterine device.
When we are shut you can obtain the obtain the emergency contraceptive pill directly from walk-in centres and many pharmacies.
